Chrząknęłam i poczułam ciepły oddech na twarzy. Szyja wygięła mi się w pałąku, ramiona skurczyły, a ręce przylgnęły do ciała. Nie mogłam zgiąć nóg.

Z nudów zaczęłam czuć zapachy. Wyczułam ketchup łagodny, zaschnięte błoto wśród pyłowatości.

Leżałam w środku dywanu.

Zawinięta w kurtynę.

Zmieniłem imię.

Na David Copperfield.

Jak byłam mała chciałam być żoną Davida Copperfielda.

Zmieniłam nazwisko.

Na Copperfield.

Jak byłam mała, nie chciałam być sobą. Chciałam zniknąć i pojawiać się, zaskakiwać i dać radość, być dotykana przez rozgrzaną dłoń.

Chciałam być kartą, co znika i pojawia się w ustach widza Davida Copperfielda.

Będę nią, już za chwilę. Ósemkę pik poproszę, Boże.

“Hello, is it Ms Johnston?”

Yes, she said and  put another spoonful of potatoes, honing the already impressive pile. Then, she went to open the door.

She invited the postman in. She did not like him at all, she decided just then, and regretted her precipitated eagerness. Now she will have to bear his company. Anyway, it was too late now, and he was too much already sitting on the chair.

“How is your wife.” she stated impassively.

“Very good.” – “the best potatoes are always yours”

He winced feebly. She issued a momentary smile, but he turned away for a moment, and when he was back, the earnestness had already relanded on her face. He felt strange pity for her; it hurt him to see her neatly folded clothes, sadly flattened with the wrinkled hand of hers. He never declined her invitation. When he visited, he would try to stay long enough for her to get bored of his companionship.

Naturally, she was trying to be nice. He would eat. She would listen. When she could not stand it anymore, she would put on the radio, and then she would listen.

He would belch – at a will. He had relieved it from the restraints of physiology many years before, while working at a butchers. They would belch into the corpses of animals. Perfect evisceration meant clear reverberation.

He would slurp, chomp, stroll, munch. She would stroll as well. Sometimes they strolled together. When he tripped, he had this waltz-like step and dramatically lifted leg. That was the best he could do.

If she got bored, she would retreat to the couch.

He could rummage through her drawers, try on her clothes, peruse photos,sometimes he would write letters – he was a postman. He came up with things to occupy her. He Rubic cube. Sometimes he moved the tv so that she would stare at a wall.  Once, she had one more guest.  She was not there. He thought she died.
